Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

9-30-10 Today we learned about parallel and perpendicular lines.
Parallel lines are line segments that will never intersect.  Examples:

Parallel lines of different lengths
Lines, 2 Parallel Horizontal

3 slanted parallel lines

Lines, 3 Parallel Slanted

Perpendicular lines are when two lines intersect to form a right angle.  (Right anle is a 90 degree angle.)  Example:

Perpendicular Lines

Please help your child recognize parallel and perpendicular lines around them.  Examples:

  1. The most intriguing thing about this blog is that most of us go day by day without noticing the small things. I don't think I have ever looked at a building where it hits the ground and said "well look there! I see a perpendicular angle!" So, I really enjoyed looking at the different kinds of small things most of us don't take time to notice. DSP

  2. I really like how you included different everyday examples of parallel and perpendicular lines. I think kids could have a lot of fun going around and pointing out all the places where they see examples of these. :) BJJ
